Circulation Questions

What materials can I check out?
General Collection books (located on 2nd floor), Children's Collection(2nd floor), Records(Media Services Room, 2nd floor), Pamphlets(Main floor), Maps(Main floor), DVDs and Videos(shelved with general collection books on 2nd floor).

How much is the fine for an overdue book?
There are no daily fines for overdue materials from the general collection. Students will be notified about overdue materials; if overdue items are not returned after notification has been sent, the items will be considered lost. The library reserves the right to charge students for processing of notices and lost items. The processing fee will not exceed $4.00 per item. The cost of replacing a lost item is $25 for a children’s item and $50 for an item from the regular collection. Library users may not check out additional materials until all overdue materials are returned and all charges have been paid. Campus mail is used to notify students of overdue items. After a grace period of 7 days, a notice containing a $2 fee per overdue item is sent to the student. The shelves are checked before any fees are charged. At the end of the semester the library reminds users to turn in their library items by placing reminder notices in campus publications and on entry and exit doors. Faculty members receive courtesy reminders of overdues during the semester and again at the end of each semester. Faculty members are not assessed overdue fees.

For how long can I borrow a book?
LOAN PERIOD--TLU STUDENTS--Library books from the general collection have a circulation period of four weeks during the spring and the fall semesters. During the summer sessions the circulation period is one week. The renewal period is one circulation period provided there is no hold on the book. Renewals will not be made by phone or mail. A current, valid TLU I.D. card is required for all transactions. There is no limit on the number of books that may be checked out.

LOAN PERIOD--FACULTY AND STAFF--The circulation period for faculty and staff is four weeks. The renewal period is one circulation period provided there is no hold on the item. Renewals will not be made by phone or mail. Faculty names must appear on the Provost’s roster of active or emeriti faculty. Staff members must hold a current TLU I.D. card. Faculty and staff are asked to bring their current TLU I.D. card with them when checking out items. There is no limit on the number of items that may be checked out.

Can I renew books?
Circulating items may be renewed as long as another patron has not placed a hold on an item. Renewal periods are the same as checkout. You must bring the items into the library in order to renew them.

Do the reference books circulate?
No, reference books from the reference collection, located on the main floor, do not circulate. You may copy pages for individual use or use the reference item in the library.

Do print journals circulate?
The library has journals in different formats: microform/fiche(Main floor), Bound back issues (lower level), and current periodicals (Main floor). All of these items are for in-library use. However, copiers (microform/fiche copiers and paper copiers) are available for photocopying pages from these items

Where are the reserve materials?
Articles and other items placed on reserve by a professor are housed behind the circulation desk and may be checked out for 2 hours at a time at the Circulation Desk.

How do I find out what journals the library owns?
The best way is to use the online Journal Titles Directory, located on the Library's home page at http://bulldogs.tlu.edu
This searchable list includes the titles of all the Library's printed, electronic, microfilm and microfiche periodical subscriptions. So, from a computer workstation in your dorm room, apartment, or office, you can learn if the Library owns any periodical you need and find out whether it may be available online in fulltext.

How do I find out what journals are available in full text?
The library subscribes to many databases that provide full text journal articles. To determine if the library has access to a particular full text journal, check the Journal Titles Directory.

General Questions and Directional Questions

Do I have access to other libraries in the area?
Yes, all current TLU students, faculty and staff are eligible for a TexShare card. To obtain a TexShare card, go to the Circulation Desk. As a member of TexShare, Blumberg Memorial Library subscribes to selected subscription databases and participates in the TexShare borrowing card program. This card provides you with borrowing privileges at a large list of academic and public librareis across the state of Texas. However, not all TexShare institutions choose to participate in cooperative borrowing, so users should contact a library staff member for details about obtaining and using a TexShare borrowing card.

Where are the books I can check out?

In addition, Pamphlets and Maps, located on the main floor, also circulate. The circulating collection is shelved in Library of Congress classification order.

Yes, you can. Please email Linda Clark, lclark@tlu.edu, Technical Services Librarian, with a detailed request (including Title, Author, ISBN(if available), price, and why you feel the library should obtain the item)

Can I donate books to the Library?
In accepting gifts, the library reserves the right to select items it needs from gift materials, and to dispose of the rest as the library deems suitable. The library does not normally accept collections of materials with restrictions that require special handling or prevent integration of items into the general library collection.

The library will not accept for deposit materials that are not outright gifts. Museum or archival-quality objects are not accepted for inclusion in the library’s general collection.

The library will supply acknowledgement of items only; the donor is responsible for any appraisals. Before accepting a gift from a donor, it must be ascertained whether monetary appraisal for income tax purposes is required, since this cannot be done after materials are dispersed.
